Update on Candidate Average Vote and Delegate Numbers
As many of you know, the number of ward and city delegates per precinct in Minneapolis is calculated by a metric called Candidate Average Vote (CAV). This metric is the average of the total votes for the Democratic candidate in the last five major statewide contests. Knowing how many Democratic votes there are per precinct helps make sure that strong DFL areas like Minneapolis have a fair share of overall state delegates. But this metric is also used for ward and city delegates inside Minneapolis.
Sonja Johnson, Training and Party Affairs Director for the Minnesota DFL Party, updated leadership today on acquiring the current CAV numbers for 2025. We know that many candidates have been wondering about this. We are still waiting on the final official results of the 2024 election from the Minnesota Secretary of State. They will ultimately get posted on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website as a spreadsheet that Party Affairs can plug into a template to calculate the CAV numbers. As the official results have yet to be posted, Sonja cannot run the numbers. We suspect the delay this year is related to recounts and ongoing legal cases. We are hopeful that Sonja and her team can run the numbers soon!
Thanks for your patience!
