Statement on the killing of Renee Good
The Minneapolis DFL stands with so many of our friends and neighbors in mourning the loss of Renee Good, and in offering our love and support to her family. We also share the city's horror and disgust over both yesterday's violence itself, and the false stories spread by the Trump administration to blame the victim of the shooting.
We will not deny the truth of our eyes and ears: ICE executed Renee Good in cold blood. Her death is on the hands of Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, and other federal Republican leaders. Their policies, their exaggerated rhetoric, and their disregard for the lives of Minnesotans lead directly to this killing.
The overwhelming majority of Minnesota residents, across all political persuasions, understand what multiple videos of this incident show: that the actions of these federal occupiers represents a breakdown of the rule of law. It is a shocking escalation by the Republican administration against American democracy, against the fundamental rights proclamed in the Declaration of Independence. Republicans have abandoned Minnesota and subjected our residents to terror, illegal abductions, and who knows what else. And now, Republican thugs have simply murdered innocent bystanders.
The DFL has called for the end to this federal Republican aggression since it began. It is time for Minnesota’s Republicans delegation to join with us and the rest of Minnesota: It is time for Minnesota’s Republicans to repudiate the lawlessness, abductions, and now murder initiated by this Republican administration. It is time for Minnesota’s Republican delegation to end their divisiveness, and end their attempts to turn our state against itself. It is time for Minnesota’s Republican delegation to join the rest of us in telling ICE to get out of Minnesota.
The urgent questions for Representatives Brad Finstad, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, and Pete Stauber are: Will you finally act to protect Minnesotans? Will you demand that ICE leave our state immediately?
Yesterday's crimes echo back to the worst regimes of the last century, and stand as a harbinger of a bloodthirst that a single killing will not satisfy. We demand that our state's Republican leadership shows the courage and character to denounce these criminals, and at long last stand alongside Minnesotans to defend our cities and state.
