Minnesota State DFL opens new investigation of Minneapolis DFL

The Minnesota State DFL has opened another investigation of the Minneapolis DFL focused on mailers announcing the original slate of 2025 endorsed candidates.

Following its July convention the Minneapolis DFL formed the 2025 Coordinated Campaign with all endorsed candidates invited to participate, a standard practice following endorsing conventions. The Coordinated Campaign produced and distributed a mailed postcard announcing the endorsed slate with the knowledge and support of the state party. The Campaign has also held doorknocks organizing volunteers to campaign for the endorsed slate, and is preparing a sample ballot mailer.

A complaint made to the DFL's Constitution, Rules, and Bylaws Committee (CRBC) alleges that the mailed postcard contradicted the retraction of Sen. Omar Fateh's endorsement for Minneapols Mayor. In fact, the postcard was delivered for mailing by its printer before the CRBC leaked its draft ruling. The bulk mail system, typically used for political mailings, offers discounted postal rates but provides slower delivery than for first-class mail. So some of these postcards arrived after the release of the CRBC's ruling.

To demonstrate that the postcards were mailed before the CRBC leak was published, the Minneapolis DFL has provided the CRBC with a dated invoice for the completed work. The invoice clearly shows the work completed before the CRBC's leak of its draft decision was published in local media. This invoice and the associated email (with contact details elided) appear below. The Minneapolis DFL expects this case to be summarily dismissed.

The investigation is being conducted by a panel subcommittee of the CRBC led by Latonya Reeves. Reeves is the author of one of the original challenges to the Minneapolis DFL convention, calling for the revocation of Sen. Fateh's endorsement. Reeves later withdrew her challenge, choosing instead to participate and vote on the CRBC ruling which retracted Sen Fateh's endorsement. Along with several other members of the CRBC, Reeves is also a voting member of the DFL State Executive Committee, which absolved the CRBC of error in their handling of the challenges to the Minneapolis DFL convention.
